The day
was not as planned, the trains were diverted via Toton, with timing delays,
however not all was lost as we saw the Winter Gardens in Sheffield not that
it was winter and there is no snow either but a good reflective place. On
returning to Sheffield station we saw another Nomad member who joined us on
our expedition to New Mills Central. We arrived at 11.00am and proceeded
down to the Torrs a large gorge cutting New Mills in two, the main point of
interest being the steel walkway and the views it enabled. The walk was
fast because of the delays, we soon got to the quarry where the trespassers
assembled in 1932. An interesting sign (see photo) refers to the Right to
Roam legislation which for us will be available from 19 September 2004. We
could not do the full walk so we went down Jacob's Ladder to the start of
the Edale valley, afternoon teas were consumed and we arrived at Edale
Station just in time for most of the group to catch the train leaving at
3.00 pm to sample the delights in the Rambler Inn.
